Where this usually goes wrong
Duct detector service calls often become device-replacement calls too quickly. Sampling tube orientation, airflow, dirty housings, remote test stations, fan shutdown logic, and wiring to the fire alarm system all need to be separated before condemning the detector.
What a duct detector does
A duct smoke detector samples air moving through an HVAC duct and initiates the programmed response when smoke is detected. Depending on the approved sequence, that response may include unit shutdown, damper operation, smoke-control actions, annunciation, supervisory or alarm signaling, and remote indication.
It is not a substitute for open-area smoke detection. Its purpose and response are defined by the mechanical and fire alarm design.
Sampling tubes and airflow
The detector only works correctly when air is drawn through the sampling chamber. Verify that the inlet tube faces the correct direction, spans the duct as required, has the correct hole orientation, and is paired with a return tube where the model requires one. Missing end caps, cut tubes, blocked holes, or installation in a low-airflow area can prevent proper sampling.
Airflow should be within the detector’s listed range. Filters, fan speed, economizer position, and system operating mode can change the pressure differential.
Testing the detector
Use the manufacturer-approved test method and coordinate with building staff before shutting down equipment. Confirm the detector enters alarm or supervisory status as programmed, the panel receives the correct point and label, the HVAC unit or damper performs the approved sequence, remote indicators operate, and the condition can be reset from the intended location.
A magnet test may verify electronics but may not prove smoke transport through the sampling tubes. The inspection method should match the required test objective.
Common trouble conditions
Frequent causes include dirty sensing chambers, reversed or damaged tubes, loose remote-test wiring, missing power, failed control relays, airflow outside the listed range, water intrusion, and programming that does not match the mechanical sequence. A detector that alarms correctly but does not stop the fan may have a separate relay, starter, VFD, or control-circuit issue.
Reset and coordination issues
Some systems require the fire alarm panel to reset before the HVAC controller can restart; others require a separate remote reset. Latching relays, smoke-control panels, and building automation systems can also hold the unit off. Identify which device owns the final reset before repeatedly cycling the detector.
Document the complete functional test
Record the duct unit served, detector location, panel address or zone, test method, airflow status, remote indicator operation, shutdown or damper response, reset method, and deficiencies. “Duct detector tested” does not show whether the life-safety interface actually worked.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Replacing the detector without verifying airflow and sampling tube installation
- Testing only the detector head while ignoring the shutdown or supervisory sequence
- Leaving remote indicators or test stations unverified after service
