Where this usually goes wrong

Elevator recall problems cross trade boundaries. The fastest troubleshooting comes from separating what the fire alarm system is commanding from what the elevator controller actually receives and does.

Treat elevator recall as a coordinated system

Elevator emergency operation involves the fire alarm system, elevator controller, power equipment, sprinkler supervision, and sometimes a shunt-trip disconnect. No single trade controls the entire sequence. Testing must be coordinated with the building representative and qualified elevator personnel.

Primary and alternate recall

Smoke detection at designated elevator lobbies and related spaces may initiate recall. The selected floor and alternate floor are determined by the approved design. The fire alarm system typically provides dry contacts or addressable relay outputs to the elevator controller, while the elevator equipment performs the actual car movement and door operation.

Verify the correct detector label, relay assignment, and recall floor. A relay click alone does not prove the elevator responded correctly.

Machine room and hoistway functions

Detection in a machine room, control room, machinery space, or hoistway may have a different effect from lobby detection, including alternate recall or firefighter visual indication. The exact response depends on the adopted code, sprinkler arrangement, elevator equipment, and approved sequence.

Shunt trip is a separate function

Where shunt trip is used, heat detection or another approved initiating condition may disconnect elevator power before sprinkler water creates an electrical hazard. The sequence often includes a time relationship between initiating devices, shunt-trip power supervision, and elevator recall. Never test shunt trip casually; it can trap equipment, damage drives, or require elevator service to restore.

Hat-light or firefighter visual indication

A dedicated visual indication may warn firefighters that detection in an elevator machine space or hoistway has operated. Verify the correct initiating devices, relay logic, and annunciation. Do not assume that every machine-room detector should produce the same response.

Plan the functional test

Review the matrix, drawings, point list, and elevator interface wiring. Place monitoring on test, coordinate car availability, and confirm who will observe the elevator response. Test each required initiating location individually, verify recall floor, door operation, visual indicators, relay restoration, and panel reset.

Record any mismatch between the approved sequence and actual operation. Do not reprogram interfaces in the field without authorization and updated documentation.
