Where this usually goes wrong
A combination speaker/strobe is two systems in one box. The speaker can work while the strobe circuit is open, and the strobe can flash while the audio pair is miswired or tapped incorrectly.
Identify the circuit architecture
Determine whether the appliance has separate speaker and strobe pairs, how the speaker circuit is distributed, what amplifier or audio zone serves it, and what NAC or power supply drives the strobe. Verify whether the speaker line uses 25-volt or 70-volt distribution as listed for the system and which transformer tap is selected at each appliance.
Troubleshoot the speaker side
For missing or weak audio, verify the amplifier zone is active, the circuit is not disabled, and the field pair is continuous. Inspect transformer tap settings and total connected wattage. A speaker tapped too high can overload the amplifier zone; a speaker tapped too low may be difficult to hear even though it technically operates. Do not change taps solely by ear—changes can affect the engineered load and intelligibility design.
Troubleshoot the strobe side
For strobe troubles, verify NAC polarity, EOL supervision, candela settings, synchronization protocol, and far-end voltage during alarm. Combination appliances often make it easy to assume the whole device is good because one function works. Test the strobe as its own supervised circuit.
Check circuit loading and voltage
Compare connected speaker wattage to amplifier capacity and connected strobe current to NAC/power-supply capacity. For long strobe runs, calculate and measure voltage drop under alarm. For speaker circuits, use the manufacturer and design documentation for acceptable loading and line testing. Do not apply a megohmmeter to connected audio electronics unless specifically permitted.
Verify the message and zone behavior
After repair, activate the applicable voice message or tone and verify the correct zone receives the correct content. Confirm strobes synchronize where required and no adjacent zone has been unintentionally disabled or cross-connected. Formal intelligibility testing, where required, should follow the approved test method and project criteria.

- Checking strobe voltage only in standby
- Calling the appliance good because either audio or strobe works
